Uribe wins Colombia election despite low turnout,
May 30, 2006
In a landslide election with over 62% of the vote, the highest ever won in Colombia, President Alvaro Uribe achieved re-election, as a result of term achievements such as the reduction in crime and the negotiated disarmament of paramilitary organizations, achieved with financial aid from Clinton-era PlanColombia. Uribe was re-elected despite voter turnout low even by Colombian standards, 45%, an astonishing figure considering that guerilla organizations kept their promise to not disrupt the elections (the usual explanation for low voter turnout), which many interpret as indicating an apathy about the political system.
