Nicaragua claims Venezuela funds the Sandinistas, April 12, 2006 [p]Leonel Teller, spokesman for Venezuela's governing party, the Constitutionalist Liberal Party, claimed that he had learned through business contacts that President Hugo Chavez of Venezuela offered oil at reduced rates to 87 of the 153 towns governed by the Sandinistas, and further, that such a deal is not legal as the funds from such a deal could be used to finance Sandinista campaigns (including the presidential campaign in November), whereas Nicaraguan law prohibits the use of foreign financing for political candidates.
