Retired cops arrested for cocaine smuggling in airline, April 5, 2006

A former army lieutenant, a retired police captain and major, two police officers, and two airline employees were arrested in Bogota’s El Dorado National Airport for attempting to bring over $10 million dollars worth of cocaine into the United States, on what is believed to be a cargo plane owned by Avianca, the Colombian national airline. These were arrested as a result of “Operation Caso Dorado,” a joint investigation by the American Drug Enforcement Agency and local Colombian and Mexican law enforcement. The drug runners were believed to be members of Colombia’s Norte de Valle drug cartel, and as the cocaine was to head to the United States, they face extradition charges.
