Arias declared winner of Costa Rican election, March 8, 2006

Oscar Arias of the National Liberation Party, a Nobel Peace Prize winner, was declared President by the Supreme Election Court, after one of the most closely contested elections in Costa Rican history, an election marked by the lowest voter turnout in Costa Rican history. Arias will take office on May 8, and Laura Chinchilla Miranda will be his first vice President.
