Accusations of fraud in Haitian elections, February 13, 2005

Preval, a former ally of ex-president Jean Bertrande Aristide with widespread support among Haiti’s urban poor, leads the Haitian vote with slightly over 49 percent, only a fraction of a percentage point away from the 50% necessary for a majority, with former military-installed president Leslie Manigat in second place with 12%. While some, like international observer Desmond Tutu urge for patience with the system, some, including Preval himself, are suspicious of electoral fraud: Preval states that the election council gave two different results simultaneously, and over 10,000 protestors have marched in support of Preval. Election officials will announce results over the internet for fear of violence.
