Bolivia inaugurates first Indian President, January 23, 2005

Evo Morales, a son of a llama shepherd and activist for indigenous coca farmers, was sworn in as the first President of Indian descent at the Akapana site of Tiahuanaco 100 km away from La Paz, with his left fist raised and wearing indigenous, pre-Hispanic clothing. He was elected on the platform of being a “nightmare” for neoliberalists and United States businesses, however, he has tempered his rhetoric, inviting Thomas Shannon, Secretary for Affairs in the Western Hemisphere, to his inauguration, and stating that “as president, he must make good business deals for his country.”
