Socialist Indian wins Bolivian Presidential Election, December 19, 2005

Evo Morales, candidate for the left-of-center Movimiento al Socialismo (MAS) achieved greater than 50% majority over former President and Vice President Jorge Quiroga of the center-right Podemos. This makes Morales Brazil’s first President of Indian extraction. Evo Morales achieved fame questing for the legalization of coca leaves. Morales’s platform is centerered on reversal of free market reforms and decriminalization of coca, the plant used to make cocaine. His opponent, Jorge Quiroga, was President of Bolivia for eight months, during which it is believed violent government response killed 13 protesters.
