Peru sues Yale to return Machu Picchu artifacts, November 30, 2005

Peru’s Foreign Ministry and National Ministry of Culture has demanded the return of over 5,000 antiquities discovered at the site of Macchu Picchu currently in possession of Yale University, and have filed a lawsuit in Connecticut State Court. These artifacts obtained by several expeditions led by Hiram Bingham in 1911, 1912, and 1914, and include ceramic pieces as well as actual human bones. The artifacts were given by Peruvian President Augusto B. Leguia to Yale for an 18 month loan, and ought to have been returned in January of 1916. Peru wants the return of the objects as the 100th Anniversary of the discovery of Machu Picchu approaches.
