Fujimori returns to South America, November 14, 2005

Alberto Fujimori, who after a corruption probe and accusations of alleged human rights violations (including silencing political opponents and torture), fled and obtained safe legal haven in Japan, made a surprise return by touching down in Chile, a nation near Peru which has been having poor mercantile relations and tensions (leading many to believe Fujimori took advantage of this situation). Though he was arrested immediately on touching down by Chilean police, those familiar with Fujimori state that he made a “calculated risk” and fully intends to be out and about. Fujimori states that he left Peru in order to run for president of Peru in the next election. Fujimori is not a well liked figure in Peru, after the corruption probe; in a poll, over 76% of Peruvians demand his extradition from Chile.
