The third-ranked agent of the Norte de Valle drug cartel, John Eidelber Cano Correa, was captured by a special forces helicopter raid on his private ranch, where he was defended by paramilitaries in the right-wing Self-Defense Forces of Colombia. The Norte de Valle are the last of the “traditional” drug syndicates after the fall of the Medellin cartel, wanted since 2003 in the United States for money-laundering and drug-related charges. Allegedly, Cano is responsible for smuggling 500 tons of cocaine in the United States; an extradition to New York is requested. President Alvaro Uribe of Colombia has come under attack by human rights organizations, stating that his plans for demobilization do not involve right of center paramilitaries giving up their drug-running activities.
