Argentina Prison revolt claims 32 lives, October 17, 2005

A revolt at a jail in Magdalena, Argentina had left 32 inmates dead by fire, mostly from asphyxiation and smoke inhalation after inmates set mattresses and blankets on fire in protest, though some were found with fatal knife wounds and a guard suffered a severe head injury. Riots, overcrowding, and poor conditions are a problem at Latin American jails. This is the second such prison riot in Argentina this year, the first being at Cordoba which claimed eight lives.
