Martinique plane crashes in Venezuela, August 16, 2005

An MD-82 West Caribbean Airlines jet came down in Venezuela, 520 miles west of Caracas. None of the 152 persons on the plane, most of them from the French island of Martinique, are believed to have survived. The Venezuelan Interior Ministry said that the plane asked for airspace clearance and permission to make an emergency landing in Maracaibo, stating that one of their engines had ceased to operate, moments later stating on the radio that the other engine also was failing. Soon after, the airplane began to lose altitude. This is the second incident this year involving West Caribbean Airlines – the first being a crash in Providencia in Colombia, killing eight people.
