U.S. Secretary of State Condaleeza Rice appointed Caleb McCarry as "transition coordinator" to Cuba, forseeing a potential unstable void existing after the death of President Fidel Castro, that nation’s revolutionary icon. Cuba on the other hand, in an editorial in Granma, claimed that President Bush is "once again meddling crudely in the internal affairs of Cuba by naming one of his men to publicly coordinate subversive activities against the island." The United States has a history of interference in Cuban affairs since the 1960s, including a failed invasion at the Bay of Pigs and various CIA assassination attempts toward President Castro. The appointment of McCarry as "transition coordinator" has caused the United States to be denounced even outside of Cuba, particularly in Brazil, where a solidarity rally of thousands were held.
