Peru farmers plan attack on foreign copper works, July 28, 2005

According to British owned Monterrico Metals, poor peasant workers that are opponents of the Peru’s rural development plan, intend to attack the copper mine site in Rio Blanco in Peru. This attack, they say, is estimated to take advantage of Independence Day, which draws away police and authorities away to parades. Monterrico metals has considered evacuating the 120 workers, and 75 police have considered to dispatch to the area. Most protests held in Peru have been held by local farmers that believe mining will ruin their crops, or alternatively, that foreign corporations give little to the rural regions they mine.
