Zapatistas place army on alert for first time in years, June 21, 2005

The Zapatistas, an indigenous far left organization centered in Chiapas and the Yucatan Peninsula, after years of quiet, have declared their forces on red alert. They have shut down their radio station, and placed themselves on a state of emergency. Human rights activists speculate that this may be prompted by army action Many have speculated this is a return to the “shooting war” of 1994. Commandante Marcos, leader of the Zapatistas, has in the recent week issued scathing commentary to supposed left of center president, claiming he will not offer a return to populism, and instead is “planting the seeds of authoritarianism.”
