Popular Mexico City Mayor returns to job in defiance of Fox, April 26, 2005

Popular leftist Mexico City Mayor and 2006 presidential candidate Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador returned to his job on Monday, despite the fact that, as he is under legal indictment, he no longer occupies the position of mayor. Lopez Obrador is under indictment for building a hospital access road on private property. One of the largest demonstrations in Mexico City history had a “walk of silence” in solaridarity with the mayor. A spokesman for Mexican President Vicente Fox has said that Lopez Obrador returning to the mayor’s office is “a provocation and a violation of the law.” Fox’s office has stated that the case against the popular Lopez Obrador is legal, not politically motivated.
