Paraguay rejects protection plan for untouched tribe, April 13, 2005

A law was struck down in Paraguay that would have reserved land exclusively for use by the last untouched tribe north of the Amazon, the Ayoreo. Indigenous groups such as Survival International, based in London, have lobbied the government of Paraguay to protect the territories of the Ayoreo, where they still hunt anteaters and wild pig with spears, against loggers and cattle-ranchers. Most Ayoreo that have left their traditional lifestyle live as ranch hands, the majority below the poverty line.
