Amnesty International Condemns Brazil for Indian Abuse, March 30, 2005

Amnesty International issued a 32 page report condemning Brazil for failure to establish and protect reservations and marcate the tribal lands of the Amazon’s indigenous people. The report also states that Brazil had failed to protect Indian lands from impending violence, and that the military has reduced the size of Indian territories along the border with Ecuador and Venezuela, citing national security concerns. Further threats come from grazing landowners and logging companies, which Amnesty International states, Brazil has done little to curb. The danger of indigenous persons being removed from their lands is the threat of violence and chronic poverty, at least according to the report. The Department of Indian Affairs in Brazil has stated they will not comment until the report is read.
