Wal-Mart to be built at Teotihuacan Pyramids, March 15, 2005

Retail giant Wal-Mart intends to build a Wal-Mart 2,000 meters from the ruins of the Ancient City of Teotihuacan in Mexico, which has aroused controversy and national wrath toward the multinational corporation from indigenous groups. At the site of the estimated construction, poet Lorenzo Trujillo led a sit-down hunger strike. Translator of Aztec Poetry Miguel Limon-Portillo proclaimed that "Wal-Mart has profaned the City of the Gods.” Some construction workers have alleged that some pieces of broken pottery were moved from the construction site, and workers were told to remain silent. Arturo Montiel, governor of the region, supports the construction, stating that a Wal-Mart will create 3,000 new jobs for the region.
