Bolivian President’s Resignation Rejected, March 9, 2005

Independent, non-political party aligned President of Bolivia Carlos Mesa’s resignation letter was unanimously rejected by the Bolivian legislature. The resignation appears to have been an attempt to rally support around his presidency, a gamble that appears successful as thousands of La Paz residents rallied in support. This was made as a result of indigenous natives protesting in the city and a national road blockade made by native Indians, whose grievances include El Alto, a foreign national water firm that is accused of not serving poorer districts.
