Guatemalans Protest Free Trade Agreement, March 2, 2005

Over 8,000 protestors, mostly made up of teachers and educators, marched in the capital of Guatemala City. Their objection was to seek an open, public referendum on the ratification of CAFTA (Central American Free Trade Agreement) with the United States, an idea that was ruled out by right of center Guatemalan President Oscar Berger. The CAFTA trade concessions are supported in the U.S. by President George W. Bush, who believes they will bring democratic reform to Central America.
