Uruguay’s First Leftist Leader Takes Office, March 1, 2005 After decades of rule by a pair of alternating moderate political parties, Uruguay is to inaugurate Tabare Vazquez, a left-of-center candidate. A medical doctor, he spent seven years in a deep well for his guerilla activities. Vazquez states that his first actions as president will be to normalize relations with Cuba, and re-examine an economic investment treaty with the United States. The inauguration will be attended by Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, as well as Cuban President Fidel Castro, in addition to a U.S. state department delegation, led by Labor Secretary Elaine L. Chao, bearing congratulations from U.S. President George W. Bush.
