Severe Flooding and Avalanches hit South America, February 15, 2005

In the Merida, Santander and Norde de Santander provinces in Venezuela, as well as along the border with Colombia, after a week of rain, flooding and avalanches have left more than 80 dead and over 60,000 homeless, particularly among shantytowns constructed along riverbanks. In addition to leaving drowned bodies left in the river, in the state of Santa Cruz, areas have been left without plumbing, electricity, and food.
