Leptospirosis Becomes Major Concern in Guyana, February 10, 2005

Guyana, plagued in recent months by heavy rainfall and flooding, is now contending with disease linked to contaminated water. Leptospirosis, a bacterial disease, has been responsible for the deaths of at least 18 people. Several other recent deaths are now being investigated. The Minister of Health states that treatment has been made available to people, and that there is a large supply of testing kits as well. Meanwhile, hospitals are overflowing, with many patients complaining of symptoms.
