Peruvian Mafiosos Create Prison Riot, February 9, 2005

A riot began in the Lurigancho prison in Peru, where rival organized mafias have attempted to seize by force the wings held by other organized mafias, holding a series of gunbattles that have left 5 inmates dead and at least 18 others wounded as a result of gunshots. Lurigancho prison holds between 7,000 and 8,000 inmates, in a structure designed for less than 1,800 prisoners, and as a result of a lack of security for entrances and exits, an absence of metal detectors, and it is suspected, outright corruption, firearms came into the hands of inmates. Police have largely been able to control the rioting, however, they still meet resistance from pockets of armed mafiosos.
