Leftists Win Governorship of Acapulco, February 8, 2005

The Leftist PRI, which was only defeated in 2000 by Vicente Fox and his opposition party, was defeated in their traditional Rightist stronghold of Guerrero, the state that includes the resort city of Acapulco. Newspaper publisher Zeferino of the PRI defeated his opponent, Hector Astudillo. This is the first victory for the Mexican Left in Guerrero in over 76 years. While the city of Acapulco and the dozens of resort islands that surround it are havens for Mexico’s wealthy, in the mountains, impoverished peasants . Thousands of Leftists were believed to have been placed into prison or disappear without a trace, according to the Federal Government’s Human Rights Office.
