DR Tries Army Captain Drug Trafficker, February 2, 2005

Arguments were held in the Supreme Court of the Dominican Republic concerning the expulsion of former army captain and drug trafficker, Quirino Paulino Castillo, whether he is to be tried in the United States or in the Dominican Republic. Castillo was discovered with 3,051 kilos of cocaine transported in his truck. The defense argues that Castillo can only receive a fair trial in the Dominican Republic, citing the Guantanamo Bay camps as a sign the US Justice System is hardly a paragon, and appealing to Dominican nationalism, citing that the U.S. "cannot push smaller countries around." The lawyers for the U.S. government stated that Castillo was wanted for extradition based on the drug seizure.
