Shining Path Guerilla Trial Delayed, November 16, 2004

Abimael Guzman, the leader of the Peruvian left of center guerilla organization Shining Path, received a further delay to his trial as three judges have stepped down, causing the trial to be delayed for 30 days. The first delay was caused as outside the courtroom, Guzman supporters protested. Judge Dante Terrel stepped down as he admitted to defending rebels before becoming a judge, Carlos Manrique, another judge, stepped down because of comments on Guzman made in a previous case. Finally, the third judge, Jose de Vinatea, had also been involved in this case, and also stepped down. The Shining Path led by Guzman in the 1980s and 1990s waged war against the government in the Andes. Abimael Guzman was captured in 1992, however, his conviction was overturned as it was established that he could not have received a fair trial.
