In a wake of a race so close a recount was ordered, pro-commonwealth candidate Anibal Acevedo Vila of the Popular Democratic Party claims victory in the race to be elected Governor of Puerto Rico, defeating his opponent, the incumbent Pedro Rossello, a Pro-Statehood governor from 1993-2000. The vote was 48.38% for Acevedo Vila and 48.18% for Rossello, with 98% of the ballots counted, though as yet Rossello has yet to give comment on the results. A recount is ordered on Monday by election commissioner Aurelio Gracia. Acevedo Vila’s campaign platform was enjoying the benefits of commonwealth status, such as greater economic autonomy, as well as criticism of Pedro Rossello’s administration, which allegedly involves a number of members of his staff mired in corruption charges.
