Peru Police Recover Coca Farmer-Seized Facility, October 21, 2004

Peruvian police reclaimed a hydroelectric plant in San Gaban, where over 800 cocaine farmers, some drunk, seized in protest a hydroelectric power plant. 85 police were required to seize the plant, including making use of tear gas and live ammunition. Three farmers have been reported killed, six injured. Peru’s interior minister, Javier Reategui, has stated that the police acted in self-defense.
