Shining Path Leader Receives Retrial, October 19, 2004

In the wake of threats to resume hostilities by the unknown Shining Path Maoist guerilla leader, only known as Artemio, several captured members of the Maoist insurgency movement the Shining Path, including former leader Abimael Guzman, are returning for trial November 5. Under tough anti-terrorism laws passed by former Peruvian President Alberto Fujimori, Abimael Guzman was captured and sentenced to life in prison by hooded judges in a military court. The trial is to be redone in wake of the removal of the antiterror laws in 2000 when Fujimori left office, as well as a 2003 when a Peruvian court ruled the laws failed international due process standards.
