Russian Foreign Minister Visits Cuba, September 30, 2004

Underscoring a history of relations between the nations which extended both ideologically and economically, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov met with high leaders in the Cuban government, including President Fidel Castro, in an attempt to create a less ambitious and smaller scale version of the alliances enjoyed by the former Soviet Union. The last official visit by a Russian official to Cuba was when Vladimir Putin visited Cuba in 2000.
