Dominican Government De-Nationalizes Newspaper, September 7, 2004

The Courts of the Dominican Republic returned to banker and newspaper magnate Baez Figueroa ownership of his newspaper, Listin Diario, which was nationalized by the government and its' assets frozen in the wake of the bankruptcy of Baninter, after reported embezzlements of $2.2 billion, allegedly by Baez Figueroa, an act that undermined the fiscal system as thousands withdrew their money from banks. The Court ruled that since the newspaper was Figueroa's property and not directly involved in the banking scandal, it had to be returned, placed into the ownership of Baez Figueroa's father, Ramon Baez Figueroa.
