Pro-Chavez Rally Attracts 100,000, August 9, 2004

Rallies both for and against the recall vote for Venezuelan President Chavez were held in Venezuela, where supporters in red, who characterize the Venezuelan President as an opponent of corruption and a voice for the poor, marched in earnest, with a crowd of over 100,000, according to the most impressive estimates. Chavez claims the Bush Administration is out to depose him, and the source of the hostility of the opposition is that he is not a functionary for the United States. The opposition, who marched in similar number in ethnic costume, claims Chavez is setting himself up as a Communist-style dictator, and many chafe at Chavez's criticisms of US-proposed free market initiatives.
