Colombian Rebels Kidnap Catholic Bishop, July 26, 2004

The leftist rebel group of the ELN kidnapped Bishop Misael Vaca Ramirez on Sunday in the town of Morconte, 220 miles northeast of the capital city of Bogota. The ELN stated that Bishop Misael Ramirez would be released unharmed at an unspecified future date, along with an ELN message for the government. The group is moving over terms on which they would come to the table: the limiting of land mine use, amnesty granted to all ELN members currently in prison, and a total, bilateral cease-fire, which has yet to be discussed by hardline right-of-center President Alvaro Uribe.
