Cuba and Mexico to Cool Spat, July 19, 2004

Mexico, the only Latin American nation to retain diplomatic ties to Cuba after the Socialist 1959 revolution, reinstated contact with that nation and will restore ambassadors by the end of the month, after pulling diplomats after outrage concerning Cuban allegations of conspiracy related to a Mexican official arrested in Havana on fraud. Mexico has used the relationship with Cuba to placate anti-western and anti-globalization leftists who are bothered by the nation's close relationship to the United States, however, Mexico accused Cubans of holding unauthorized meetings in Mexico, and were further enraged by comments by Cuban dictator Fidel Castro calling Vicente Fox a "lackey" of the United States.
