President Luis Ignacio de Silva of Brazil designated as protected national park reserves more than a million acres of rainforest in the coastal states of Paraiba and Parana, and in the states of Amapa and Aranhao. Under the state of being declared national parkland, they can be used for scientific sutainable use projects, ecotourism, and research. Over 20 percent, or 7 million acres, of Brazil's jungles have already been claimed by cattle ranching, slash and burn agriculture, and logging.
