Attorney Wants to Charge Mexico City Presidential Rival, May 19, 2004

Mayor of Mexico City Andres Lopez Obrador, as a part of the conflict between the left-of-center mayor and the right-wing Mexican Federal Government of Vicente Fox, is being petitioned by Federal Prosecutors to have his legal immunity revoked so that he can be placed on charges related to a 2001 land deal, which prosecutors insist was illegally expropriated. Considered the Leftist potential candidate in 2006 under Mexico's Democratic Revolution Party, and a constant critic of the policies of Vicente Fox's right-wing government, Lopez Obrador insists the charges are politically motivated and designed to eliminate him politically. Fox and his ministers deny the claim vehemently, and insist it is an issue of justice, not politics. If convicted, Lopez could face 8 years in prison.
