Over 100 Killed in Prison Fire in Honduras, May 18, 2004

An electrical fire broke out in a severely overcrowded prison in San Pedro Sula, Honduras, on Monday. The deaths of 102 inmates, provoked both outrage from some who charge that terrible conditions, overcrowding and gunfire from guards to keep inmates in burning cells, contributed to a large number of the deaths. Most of the inmates killed were members of a gang that has been blamed for increasing crime rates in Honduras and throughout Central America, and targeted by a Maduro government crackdown.
