Nicaraguans Destroy 1980s Rocket Stockade, May 6, 2004

Nicaragua, acting under what President Enrique Bolanos calls a "genuine example of our interest in reaching a reasonable balance of arms in Central America," destroyed over 333 surface-to-air rockets, according to the Nicaraguan Defense Ministry. An additional reason is U.S. pressure, which has repeatedly urged Nicaragua to destroy the Russian-made, shoulder-firing SAM-7 missiles in order to prevent them from falling into the hands of International Terrorism, which Nicaragua called a sign of good faith to Washington. The weapons were left over from the 1980s, when they were used in conflict by the Nicaraguan government against counterrevolutionaries. Nicaragua intends further to destroy another 333 missiles in July.
