Extralegal Mexican Border Migration on Rise, April 28, 2004

Breaking the trend of a four-year decline, immigration from Mexico illegally is on the rise, on what many believe is as a result of the work visa under a program President Bush created, which gives guest worker status to undocumented migrants who can establish they have employment. The Border Patrol, which uses detentions to determine the rate of extralegal migration, jumped 25 percent in six months ending March 31. 75% of those arrested at the border are Mexican, with the remainder being mostly Central American and elsewhere.
