Haitian Rebel Commander Surrenders, April 22, 2004 Rebel commander and convicted assassin Louis-Jodel Chamblain surrendered himself to justice on Tuesday where he was admitted into a prison cell, to the cheers of his supporters. Convicted in absentia in 1995 to life for the brutal murder of Aristide financier, Antoine Izmery, who was dragged from a chuch. Chamblain states that his conviction was groundless and politically motivated and there never was any evidence. A rebel leader, Chamblain's group is dedicated to the restoration of the Haitian Armed Forces. Human rights organizations, concerned about Haiti's affiliation with criminals, have expressed concern he may not remain in prison for very long.
