Voodoo Houngan Calls for Haitian Unity, April 11, 2004

At a Haitian Voodoo Easter festival in Souvenance, goats are sacrificed to the spirit of war, Ogoun, in prayers for the healing and fracturing of the nation, fueled by a bloody rebellion that killed 300 people since February. Many point to the unificating practice of the religion, one of Haiti’s three constitutionally recognized faiths along with Roman Catholicism and Protestantism. "Voodoo is all about unity," said George Fernand, 63, a Voodoo houngan, or priest. "We're hoping the new government will help bring us unity."
