Curacao Government Coalition Collapses, April 8, 2004

Citing a litany of reasons against the FOL (Frente Obrero Liberation) Party that has held the reins of power, the four political parties that are coalition partners in the Dutch Antilles government at Curacao have withdrawn their support, citing irreconcileable differences. The reasons for this include the failure of FOL leader Anthony Godet to resign after his conviction on fraud, falsification of documents and embezzlement concerning airport construction and the switch to privatization of the Curacao postal service. They also demand the stepdown of Ben Komproe, minister of justice, who is believed to have allowed a large party donor to remain in the hospital longer than necessary before facing a 42 year sentence for corruption. He is also blamed for the islands’ recent crime wave, as the stopover in the drug drade from South America. A vote of No Confidence is expected to be taken
