Conservative Wins El Salvador Election, March 21, 2004

Tony Saca, a former Sportscaster and candidate of the right of center party of El Salvador, was elected President in the Salvadorian elections in one of the most polarizing elections in El Salvador’s history. The pro-Saca media outlets savagely attacked his Communist Party opponent, former guerilla leader Schafik Handal, who refused to congratulate the victor and described his election victory as the result of use of “fear and blackmail.” While Saca is president, the legislature is still largely controlled by the Salvadorean Leftist Party, who have vowed to veto Saca’s legislation, including his campaign platform, a pro-US Free Trade bill.
