A controversy was aroused by auction house Christie's concerning the auctioneering of items belonging to Juan and Eva "Evita" Peron to take place in Rome on Tuesday. The detractors from the sale, including former aide to the Perons, Juan Gabriel Labake, insist the collection, which includes the white silk burial shroud used by Evita, be placed in a museum, and is urging citizens of Buenos Aires to take to the streets in protest. Former Argentine President Adolfo Rodriguez Saa reportedly made a last minute appeal to Christie's to halt the sale. Christie's, however, maintains that the items have gone on sale thanks to a humanitarian foundation created at the behest of the Perons, and would benefit the Argentinian people.
