U.S. Faces Criticism for Treatment of Haitian Refugees,

With growing unrest in Haiti leading to more Haitians fleeing the country, the Bush administration has been criticized by immigrant advocates and many Democratic senators for its repatriation of Haitian refugees. Advocates argue that Haitian refugees are assumed by immigration officials to be fleeing from poverty rather than politcal repression, and are thus denied access to the American asylum process.
