Steps Toward Justice for Mexico's Dirty War Victims, February 20, 2004

The arrest of Miguel Nazar, the former director of the defunt Federal Security Agency, has been hailed as a big step towards justice for atrocities committed in Mexico's "Dirty War." Nazar is accused of heading a police force which kidnapped and killed dissidents from the 1960's -1980's. The special prosecutor's office in charge of the investigations into Dirty War abuses, are also preparing arrest warrants for more than 300 former members of the police and military they say are connected to the disappearances, torture, and killings. Also implicated are former presidents Echeverria and Lopez Portillo, who recently died.
