Mexican Ex-President Jose Lopez Portillo Dies, February 18, 2004

Former President of Mexico Jose Lopez Portillo died on Tuesday, February 17, 2004 in Mexico City from complications arising as a result of pneumonia at the age of 83. President from 1976 to 1983, he claimed to still possess the values of the 1910-20 revolution, and often lamented he was unable to do enough for the nation's poor. Under his reign, Mexico used the crude oil market to improve the Mexican economy to unseen heights, only to be followed by a catastrophic bust. Jose Lopez Portillo is survived by his wife, former movie star Sasha Montenegro, and his six children.
