CARICOM Leaders, Aid Agencies and U.S. Monitor Growing Unrest in Haiti, February 13, 2004

Haiti continues to be plagued by violent opposition to President Aristide and violent repression of opposition by police and pro-Aristide militia. In the meantime, CARICOM leaders say they will consider sending a peacekeeping force, if requested by Haitian authorities. The Bush Administration has said that it is carefully monitoring the situation in Haiti, and also expressed dissatisfaction with Aristide without explicitly stating its support of his removal from power. Aid agencies are warning of crisis, suggesting their inability to deliver food and aid as a result of the violence.
